Words, Glorious Words

  It's payback time for the eleven snow days my school missed during February. One of the ways we are making up those days is starting classes fifteen minutes earlier and staying fifteen minutes longer. Our state tests sixth graders in reading and math. So, everyone in my building is teaching fifteen minutes of math in the morning and fifteen minutes of reading in the afternoon. The math has been a good stretch since it has been around ten years since I used the left side of my brain this much. Sure it is just sixth grade math but exponents are not a part of my everyday thought process. Explain to me WHY any number to the zero power is always one and I still won't understand it. It's one of those rules that just IS.
  I'd take a million words over a million numbers any time. The exception would be if all those numbers were part of a book contract then I would gladly wrap my meager left brain around them.
  Exponents, fractions, and decimals are not what I call fun--they are hard work. But words--they are glorious. I've been collecting great words for the last several months and I don't think I'll ever tire of hearing the sound of vowels, accents on syllables and letter combinations that roll off the tongue.

  Caucus, supersede, disheveled, rapscallion, linchpin, tutelage, amok, canoodle--don't these combinations of letters make you just smile?
